Cow disease shatters farmers‍‍` dream

In Kaunia Upazila of Rangpur, 7 cows died due to an unknown virus within a week. Besides, hundreds of cows and goats in the area have been infected by the same virus. It is not yet known why these cows are dying. However, many people believe that Lampy is suffering from skin disease and heat stroke. Currently, more than a hundred cows are also known to be infected with this disease. Farmers said that they are resorting to village doctors, Kaviraj, and homeopathic doctors as they do not get treatment from the livestock department.

In the last seven days, 7 cows including 3 of Ashraful Islam, 1 of Delwar Hossain, 1 of Anwarul Islam, and 2 of Khalil Mia have died. The prevalence of this disease is high in the Sabdi Haddapara, Bhootchhara, and Haldibari villages of the Balapara union of the Shahidbagh union of the upazila. After finding out, these cows and goats are not eating properly since they got sick. Affected by various symptoms including fever and cough, domestic animals are gradually becoming weak. Then it suddenly dies. Cows and goats infected with this unknown virus are often found in different houses.

Upazila Livestock Officer Dr. Sumi Akhter said that she is aware of the disease but does not know about the death of cows. She also said that this disease is more noticeable during summer. In the meantime, action is being taken and a team has been formed to monitor the situation and inform the district livestock officer. But if it rains or winter, this disease will decrease. Soda, paracetamol, and vaccination should be given to prevent this disease. District Veterinary Officer Dr. Ambar Ali said that the fact that so many cows were killed at one time is very alarming. The monitoring team will be working so that we can get rid of Lumpy Skin Disease and Heat Stroke disease as soon as possible.
